KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Senior defender
Bridget Gaughan has been selected to the 2009 NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division I All-Southeast Region Third Team, according to a release made by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America this week. The teams are selected by college coaches from around the United States.
Gaughan is the second Kennesaw State player since 2005 to collect the honor as Rachel Baer received the honor last season. Gaughan joins fellow Atlantic
Sun Conference standouts Jayme Trocino of Belmont and Mercer’s Olivia Tucker on the third team.
The Marietta, Ga. native was also named the A-
Sun Defensive Player-of-the-Year and helped lead the Owls to the A-
Sun regular season and tournament titles this year while advancing the Black and Gold to their second NCAA Tournament appearance in the last three years.
Gaughan, the Owls captain, played and started in every game, finishing the year with one goal and three assists. The nursing major also led the team in minutes played with 1,535.
“Bridget has had a fantastic career at KSU,” said associate head coach Frank Pitt. “She definitely peaked this season and consistently showed she was the top defender not only in the conference, but proved that she is one of the premier defenders in the southeast.”
In addition to Gaughan’s individual recognition, the Owls have also been selected as an NSCAA All-Academic Team. Kennesaw State is one of seven different schools from the A-
Sun to earn Team Academic Awards from the NSCAA. Only three conferences, The Big East, Southeastern Conference and Conference USA earned more NSCAA team awards than the A-
Sun.
