KENNESAW, Ga. - Both the Owl's men's and women's Track and Field teams will be represented in Eugene, Ore., when the 2009 USA Junior National Outdoor Track and Field Championships occur on June 25-28.
Jemir Martinez will represent the Owls in the 100m after qualifying with a time of 10.66 in the event at the Outdoor Conference Championships on May 15. Martinez is scheduled to compete at 2:20 p.m. on Friday, June, 26.
"Jemir is an exceptional athlete that works extremely hard and I am very proud of his accomplishment," Assistant Coach Devin West said.
Meanwhile, on the women's side, Suzzette Van-Lare will compete in the triple jump which is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 28. She qualified for the meet, after recording a jump of 11.95m at the Outdoor Conference championships as well.
"Suzzette is a naturally gifted athlete who has really turned the corner in her training and has proven over the course of the year that she can compete with anyone in the country," Assistant Coach Mike Goss said.
This weekend will mark the first time in the history of the Kennesaw State Track and Field program that the Owls have been represented at the National meet.
The top two finishers in each event at the Championships will qualify to compete in the 2009 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships, which will be held in Port of Spain, Trinidad, on July 31-August 2.
"We are extremely excited about the opportunity for two of our young athletes to compete in front of the country in such a prestigious meet," Head Coach Don McGarey said. "We are confident that they will represent Kennesaw State well."
