KENNESAW, Ga. – After shooting a 1-under par 71 in the first round of the Jones Cup, Kennesaw State’s Matt Nagy shot a 9-over par 81 in the second round of the three-day event at the Ocean Forest Golf Club in Sea Island, Ga. on Saturday afternoon.

The Jones Cup, one of the most prestigious amateur events in the world, features a field of college All-Americans, the top juniors and mid-amateurs from the United States as well as National Team members from Europe, and some of the top amateurs from all across the globe.  

“It is great for Matt to have an opportunity to play in this event and it’s exciting to have someone representing KSU in this field,” said head coach Jay Moseley, who played in this event last year. “Matt has been preparing all winter for this event and I have tried to help his as much as possible because I played in the event last year.”

Nagy, 8-over par 152, is currently in a six-way tie for ninth place as he trails Blayne Barber by five strokes. Barber, (3-over par 147) shot a 1-over par 73 yesterday and followed with a 2-over par 74 in the second round. Victor Dubuisson, Hunter Hamrick and Patrick Reed are in a three-way tie for second place at 4-over par 144.

Nagy earned a bid to the Jones Cup based upon his amateur rankings combined with his qualifying for the United States Open last year and his top 10 finish at the Dogwood Invitational.

The Ocean Forest Golf Club is a very tough course which is long and very demanding both off the tee and around the green was made enough more difficult over the first two rounds with brisk temperatures and winds with gusts to as much as 30 miles per hour.

“I hit the ball better today [Saturday] even though the conditions were much tougher,” said Nagy. “My short game bailed me on yesterday.”
