KENNESAW, Ga. – The field is set for the 2011 Women’s College Cup, with the four national semifinalists set to make their journey to KSU Soccer Stadium, Dec. 2-4. Number one seeds Duke, Florida State, Stanford and Wake Forest all punched their tickets to the premier event in women’s college soccer with thrilling quarterfinal victories on Friday evening.
The event kicks off on Friday evening at 5 p.m., when the Stanford Cardinal takes on the Florida State Seminoles. At 7:30 p.m., the second semifinal is slated to begin, with the Duke Blue Devils facing their local rivals, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. The winners of each match will square off on Sunday at 1 p.m. with the national championship at stake.
Duke, Florida State and Wake Forest all won their respective matches convincingly on Friday evening on their home fields, with the Blue Devils taking down Long Beach State, 2-0, while Florida State topped Virginia and Wake Forest Central Florida by scores of 3-0. Stanford, for their part, showed a flair for the dramatic, scoring a golden goal 2:40 into extra time to defeat Oklahoma State, 2-1.
The event will be a historic one, as ACC members Duke, Florida State and Wake Forest’s advancing to the national semifinals marks the first time in Women’s College Cup history that three teams from the same conference have qualified for the event.
While Wake Forest is the only program of the four that will be making their first trip to the final four of women’s soccer this weekend, Sunday’s championship match will conclude with a first-time national champion. Stanford will be making their fourth straight Women’s College Cup appearance, and finished as the national runner-up in 2009 and 2010. Florida State qualified for four national semifinals from 2003 to 2007, finishing as the national runner-up in 2007. Duke will be making their second-ever trip the Women’s College Cup, as they finished as the national runner-up in 1992.
Limited tickets are still available for this coming weekend, with packages that include admission to all three matches starting at 45 dollars. Groups of 15 or more can receive all-tournament admission for 35 dollars per person. Fans can visit
