DeLAND, Fla. – The No. 25-ranked Stetson Hatters scored in the first four innings as they handed Kennesaw State its second straight loss, 10-2, on Saturday afternoon at Melching Field.
Stetson (24-7, 11-3) scored solo runs in the first and second innings before breaking the game open with three runs in the third and two more in the fourth inning. The Owls were only able to manage six hits and solo runs in the fourth and fifth frames.
Owls starter Bryan Blough (1-3) pitched six innings and grew increasingly stronger throughout the day as he left after retiring the final eight batters he faced. Even though he retired the lead off batter in each of his six innings of work, Blough allowed the second batter of each of the first four innings to reach base and score.
Five Stetson players had multi-hit games with four having three hits as the Hatters pounded out 16 hits against three Kennesaw State pitchers. Robert Crews, Nick Rickles, Mark Jones and Spencer Theisen all had three hits while Jeff Simpson added a pair of hits.
While the Owls had two runners on base in six of the nine innings, they never seemed to threaten against the five Stetson pitchers used in the game. The Owls stranded 11 runners in the game, yet in addition to the two runs scored, the Owls only had two runners advance past second base.
Ethan Herron led the Kennesaw State offense with a pair of doubles and a run batted in while Aaron Dobbs drove in the Owls other run with a fifth inning single to right field. Ronnie Freeman, Peyton Hart and Ray Anderson, who extended his hitting streak to five games, had the remainder of the six hits.
