NORMAN, Okla. – Kennesaw State men’s golfer Jeff Karlsson has been selected as a 2010-11 Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar in a statement released by Golf Coaches Association of America on Wednesday afternoon.

The Owls rising senior, who led Kennesaw State to its first-ever NCAA Division I National Tournament appearance, was one of 138 NCAA Division I players to earn one of the most prestigious academic honors in collegiate golf. Karlsson was one of eight student-athletes from the Atlantic Sun Conference to receive the recognition this season.

"It is always a great honor for your student-athletes to be recognized for excellence in the classroom and on the course,” said Kennesaw State men’s head golf coach Jay Moseley. “This is a special award because you must earn it with hard work and discipline and Jeff is certainly very deserving of this award. Jeff has all the qualities that would make any coach proud and he is a fine ambassador for KSU."

Karlsson is the fifth Kennesaw State player to earn this honor and the third in the Division I era, joining Oliver West and J.P. Putnam, who was selected last year. Luke Stephan was a two-time recipient in 2002 and 2003 while Spencer Askew was the first Kennesaw State student-athlete to be honored, earning the selection in 1999.

To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status, the student-athlete must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, and participate in 70-percent of his team’s competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships. They must also have a stroke-average under 76.0 while also maintaining a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade-point average and be in good standing at their college or university.

Karlsson claimed the 2011 A-Sun individual championship and led the Owls this season with a 70.6 stroke average. He posted a team-leading, six top-5 and nine top-10 finishes and in 11 events, Karlsson had 10 top-20 finishes and had the top four lowest rounds of the year for the Owls, including a pair of 65’s at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate.
