KENNESAW, Ga. - On a chilly Tuesday morning, with the grass still glazed over and the shadow of KSU Stadium stretching over the practice field, it was just business as usual for the Kennesaw State women’s soccer team as it gears up for its spring season.
Kennesaw State went 7-8-2 in 2011, and it returns six starters from that squad this spring. Two of the returning starters were all-conference honorees in Katrina Frost and co-captain Jewelia Strickland. Frost, who led the Owls in scoring last year with 24 points (11g, 2a), made Second Team All-Conference. Strickland, who was the backbone of the KSU defense in 2011, was named to the A-Sun All-Freshman team.
Strickland talked about how hard the team has been working this winter and how the way last season ended has been motivating them throughout the offseason.
“Coming back this January we hit the ground running... literally," Strickland said. "A stinging disappointment from last season has awakened a hunger in our team to work harder than we ever have before. The encouraging, competitive nature of our practice and weight training sessions is sure to result in a bright future for us. We are coming out every day striving to make our best even better."
The Owls also released their 2012 spring schedule this afternoon as it has a little different feel to it this year compared to previous ones with three 7v7 events, and the annual Alumni Game. Head Coach Rob King looks forward to seeing how his team progresses this spring and talks about the process of getting ready for the spring slate.
“I couldn't be more pleased with the way our team has responded since the end of the fall season,” coach King said. “Given the injuries within the squad our focus this spring is on individual development. Our Strength and Conditioning program is in full swing the players are getting fitter, quicker and stronger. At the same time, we've fully implemented the PEP program into our training structure in an effort to minimize long term knee injuries within the squad. Technically, we’re trying to broaden the array of options our players have on the ball and refine the skills that they already have. Our injured players are doing well in their recoveries, but many will not play a part in our spring games.”
KSU begins its spring slate on March 17 with a 7v7 tournament at Western Carolina. The Owls will have a week off before taking on in-state rival Georgia in a 7v7 tournament on Mar. 24 in Athens. Kennesaw State plays its final 7v7 tournament at Clayton State on Mar. 31.
The Owls then return home to KSU Stadium for its final two events of the spring with a game against an opponent yet to be determined on April 15, and its annual Alumni Game on April 22.
