KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State Owls sophomore Amanda Henderson earned her first-career Atlantic Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week award, the conference announced on Monday. Henderson notched a 0.64 earned run average in three appearances this week, earning a win and two saves.
“Amanda has been terrific for us this season in a variety of roles, whether it has as a starter, long relief, or as a closer,” Owls head coach Scott Whitlock said. “She has taken some major strides this season and we look forward to her continuing to improve, as she has made some major contributions to this club already in 2012.”
Henderson struck out 14 batters in the Owls, 2-1, victory over Morehead State on Saturday in what would the Owls (6-1) final game in the College of Charleston Classic, allowing just one earned run on three hits in the win. She earned saves in the Owls two wins on Friday, shutting down Marshall over three innings in their, 4-3, victory over the Thundering Herd before pitching the seventh inning to seal the Owls, 4-2, triumph over Charleston Southern.
The Covington, Ga., native enters Monday third in the A-Sun with a 0.46 ERA, and has struck out 31 batters over 15 and a third innings while having issued just one walk. She is 2-0 this season and has earned either the win or the save in each of her four appearances this season.
The award is the first of Henderson's career with the Owls. She posted a 2.65 ERA during her freshman campaign in 2011, second lowest on the Owls, despite going just 5-9 in 27 appearances.
Henderson and the Owls return to action on Friday, when they take on Alabama State and Bradley to begin their three-day, five-game weekend as hosts of the 11-team Phyllis Rafter Memorial. The event will take place at Twin Creeks Softball Complex in Woodstock, Ga.
