Official Conference Release

MACON, Ga. – Kennesaw State women’s basketball freshman Kristina Wells has been named the Atlantic Sun Conference Newcomer of the Week for the second time this season, conference officials announced on Tuesday morning.

The Douglasville, Ga. native helped the Lady Owls clinch their third-straight A-Sun Tournament berth by leading her team to a 1-1 record in the River City last weekend. Wells averaged 13.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals, while shooting 45 percent from the floor in the two games.

Wells’ best game of the trip came against North Florida on Saturday as she recorded career-highs of 19 points, six steals and seven field goals made in the loss. She also chipped in four rebounds and two assists in 36 minutes of action.

“Kristina has worked hard from the beginning to become a better player,” head coach Colby Tilley said. “We knew coming in that she was going to be a good player, but we didn’t expect her to be this good this fast. We are really excited about her future here, and the award that she was given today because it recognizes what she has done for our program this season.”

Wells now ranks second among all A-Sun freshmen in six different categories: Points (9.5), rebounds (5.5), field goal percentage (.441) free throw percentage (.734), steals (1.7) and minutes (31.4). Her .441 field goal percentage also ranks eighth out of all A-Sun players.

This is the women’s basketball team’s fifth A-Sun Newcomer of the Week award this season. Wells won the award previously on Nov. 22, while freshman guard Taylor Mills took home the honor on Dec. 6, Dec. 20 and Jan. 17.

The Lady Owls will be back home this weekend as they will wrap up their 2011-12 regular season starting with Belmont on Feb. 23. Tipoff from the KSU Convocation Center is set for 4:45 p.m., with live audio available via KSU All-Access. Thursday will also be Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night as any KSU employee can bring a guest to the game for free.
