KENNESAW, Ga. - The Kennesaw State Department of Athletics unveiled their Rehabilitation Center this past October, adding an important aspect to the Owls Sports Medicine operation.
Chris Archambeault, Associate Athletic Trainer and Rehabilitation Coordinator, saw the need for a rehabilitation facility on campus when he first started with Kennesaw State five years ago.
“I saw that we were having to outsource most of our post-surgical rehabs to physical therapy clinics because we just didn’t have the space or the equipment to do the rehab that we needed to do,” Archambeault said. “I thought we were doing a disservice to our student-athletes by not being able to rehab them the way we wanted to. When I found out we were getting the space in the Convocation Center, I wanted to limit our outsourcing of rehabs. I wanted us to be able to do all of our rehabs in house to build that relationship with our coaches and our student-athletes, to help them get back to their teams faster by doing everything here. That was our main goal with our rehab center.”
Logistics also worked in the department’s favor. The recent construction of the brand-new weight room, which tripled in size and is now housed in the department’s indoor practice facility, opened up the original facility for the rehab room to be built in.
“The Sports Medicine team has always worked to provide the best care for our student-athletes,” said Karen Pfeifer, the Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Welfare. “Over the past decade, we have consistently added staff members, outside medical providers and satellite training rooms to up the game for our student-athletes. The one area we were lacking was a rehabilitation center. We utilized every nook and cranny and hallway space we could find. As we planned for the new weight room over the past two years, we identified that the old weight room was the space that would solve that problem. With the support of our administration and our team physician, the rehabilitation center became a reality this past fall. We are so excited that our student-athletes will benefit from this addition for years to come."
In getting the facility ready for use, it was important to ensure that the equipment critical to student-athlete rehabilitation were in place.
“The space that we have is very generous, but we needed to make sure we were making the most out of it, so we picked out the big machines that would help us out the quickest. The Shuttle Recovery, the Impulse Machine and a multi-hip machine that we have in here can work just about every major muscle group and every stabilizing muscle group, so it was critical that based the facility around those three machines.
The Rehabilitation Center will continue to improve the overall well-being and health of student-athletes at the University.
“The coaches will be able to bring the athletes in and show them if they get hurt, this is the equipment that we have and we have this entire space to help them get better, and our athletic trainers know how to help you get back into competition the fastest. The best part is that all of that can now take place right on campus.
