KENNESAW, Ga. - The Kennesaw State Track and Field teams had a solid showing at the Georgia Tech Invite which is the final meet before the NCAA East Preliminaries in two weeks. Teams from all over the Southeast competed in this “last chance” scenario to qualify for their section’s preliminaries.
Friday afternoon saw Atlantic Sun medalist Suzee Mills, and teammate Shannon Hooper, compete in the hammer throw. Mills placed 13th and Hooper came in right behind her in 14th with marks of 48.33 and 47.82 meters, respectively.
On Saturday, Christie Leverette tied for ninth place in the high jump, achieving a mark of 1.66 meters, only one-tenth off her school record from the A-Sun Championships. Michelle Quimby took 12th place in women’s pole vault with a height of 3.68 meters, while teammate Shannon Hooper finished ninth in the discus throw.
Naomi Mack achieved a personal best in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.48 seconds, tying her for second in the All-Time Top-10 record books.
The 4x100 relay of LaTia Daniels, Kentrell White, Cynthia Davis and Victoria Jackson placed seventh overall for Kennesaw State with a final time of 46.33 seconds, while distance runner Brittany Robinson took 21st place in the 800 meter run.
On the men’s side, the 4x100 relay of Kendall Parks, Sadio Diallo, Jemir Martinez and Rasmus Rooks took sixth place for the Owls. Parks would later return in the finals of the 110 meter hurdles to finish fourth, just one-tenth of a second off his school record. His teammate Brian Graham would take 24th overall. In the 200 meter dash, Reggie Lewis also placed 24th for the Black and Gold.
Brandon Dwyer was just shy of his personal best mark set at the A-Sun Championships in the men’s pole vault, clearing 4.60 meters, placing him 14th.
The Kennesaw State Track and Field teams will now await the final selections for the NCAA East Preliminaries, having nine athletes already qualified for the event. The meet is scheduled to take place May 24-26 at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. This venue is very familiar to the Owls as both teams finished second earlier this season at the stadium in the 2012 A-Sun Championship.
