MACON, Ga. – The Kennesaw State track and field program earned double honors as both
Gwen Jones and
Martynas Sedys received Atlantic Sun Field Athlete of the Week honors announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon.
Each athlete put up impressive performances at the Blazer Invitational to put them atop the A-Sun Performance list and win them their first Indoor Track Field Athlete of the Week award. Jones, a senior from Statesboro, Ga. broke her own school record in the shot put with a third place throw of 13.30m (45-08.50). Her throw ranks number one in the A-Sun by almost a meter, beating out April Terry of Lipscomb (12.52m).
"Gwen is a seasoned veteran and wants to leave her mark at KSU, and the Atlantic Sun Conference," Assistant Coach Duane Morris stated. "I am amazed at the things she does in practice on a daily basis, she is a special athlete."
Sedys, a freshman from Marijampole, Lithuania competing in his first ever-collegiate event earned first place in Flight Two with a weight throw of 17.45. Good enough to enter him third in the KSU record book, Sedys comes in just three feet of the record held by two-time NCAA competitor Joshua McNair. The throw also has Martynas ranked first in the conference ahead of Kenneth Sugishita of USC Upstate (16.47m).
"Martynas is a talented young thrower who will do well in our conference indoors," Morris said. "He will be a force at outdoor nationals, which is his main focus."
Each athlete will return to competition on Friday, Jan. 18, when the team travels to Johnson City, Tenn., to compete in the annual Niswonger Invitational. Keep up with Owls track and field by following KSU on Twitter at
