SEA ISLAND, Ga. –
Kennesaw State sophomore Jimmy Beck qualified for the 2013 Jones Cup after winning the qualifier on Monday. Shooting a 70, -2 on the 7013 yard Ocean Forest Golf Course, Beck makes it the fourth year in a row that an Owl has competed in the prestigious event.

“This is a great way to start the spring season,” Beck stated. “It is exciting to go compete at such a great venue against the top amateurs in the world. This is one of the toughest courses I have ever played. It will take three days of pure focus as anything can happen on this course.”

The event will begin on Feb. 1-3 at the Ocean Forest Golf Club. The field is comprised of the best amateurs from around the world, with 10 different countries being represented. Champion Justin Thomas will look to defend his title against a strong field that includes Steven Fox (2012 US Amateur Champion), Nathan Smith (4 time US Mid Amateur Champion), Bobby Wyatt (Sunnehanna Amateur Champion), Peter Williamson (Southern Amateur and North/South Amateur Champion), Richy Werenski (Porter Cup Champion) and a host of other talented amateurs who have hopes of playing their way onto their respective Walker Cup team.

"I am extremely proud of Jimmy's performance in yesterday's qualifier,” Head Coach Jay Moseley said. “He set out with a great game plan for the course and knew what he had to do. I am thrilled for him to have the opportunity to compete in the Jones Cup, one of the most elite amateur events in the world. I am also very proud of Jonathan (Klotz) and Peder's (Lunde Hermansson) performance, even though they came up a bit short of qualifying."

Klotz finished the round at 73, +1 to miss qualifying by one shot, while Hermansson posted a 75, +3.

The Jones Cup was born from a deep commitment to amateur golf by the A.W. Jones family, who founded the Cloister and Sea Island Golf Club in 1928. The Sea Island Golf Club has played host to seven USGA championships. The Jones Cup is yet another extension of the family's strong involvement in amateur golf.

First contested in 2001, Jones Cup began as an opportunity to celebrate not only the game of golf, but also the camaraderie and fellowship associated with it. This 54-hole individual stroke-play event is played at Ocean Forest Golf Club. The Rees Jones design opened in 1995 and has hosted the 1998 Georgia State Amateur Championship, the 1999 Southern Amateur Championship and the 2001 Walker Cup Match. The Jones Cup brings together many of the finest amateurs from the United States and abroad for this three-day competition. While the golf course proves to be a great venue for this unique event, the Jones Cup's success and popularity can be attributed to the strength of the players who comprise its field. Past participants range from current and future PGA Tour stars Luke Donald, Rickie Fowler, Lucas Glover, Dustin Johnson, Chris Kirk, Jeff Overton, Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker, Bubba Watson and Gary Woodland as well as Past Champions DJ Trahan, Gregg Jones, Nicholas Thompson, Luke List, Kyle Stanley, Patrick Reed and John Peterson.

Beginning in December 2009, the inaugural Jones Cup Junior Invitational was played on the Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club. The Jones Cup Junior Invitational is a logical extension of the Jones Cup tradition and spirit of competition and will feature the country's top male junior golfers in a 54-hole stroke play competition.

The event is open to the public with starting times beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, February 1.
