WBB: Sawyers Earns First Career A-Sun Newcomer of the Week Honor

Freshman Led Owls to 83-79 Win over Alabama A&M on Sunday

KENNESAW, Ga. – After leading the Kennesaw State women's basketball team to an 83-79 win over Alabama A&M on Sunday, freshman guard Deandrea Sawyers was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Newcomer of the Week, the conference announced on Monday, Dec. 30.
 
It was Sawyers' first career Newcomer of the Week honor and the first conference accolade for the Owls this season.
 
"I am so excited and proud of Deandrea earning this honor," said head coach Nitra Perry. "She is an extremely hard worker and has the heart of a lion."
 
Sawyers registered a team-high 22 points against the Bulldogs, including a 5-of-12 mark from three-point range. She added three steals, two assists and two rebounds in 40 minutes of action.
 
It was the third 20+ point game of her rookie campaign, after scoring 24 points against Jacksonville State and Murray State earlier in the season.
 
Sawyers and the Owls continue their four-game home stand in the New Year as Kennesaw State opens Atlantic Sun Conference play against Jacksonville on Thursday, Jan. 2 at the KSU Convocation Center. Game time is set for 7 p.m. ET and can be seen on the ESPN3 network.
