KENNESAW, Ga. – Sophomore Austin Vick, who turned in his highest finish of the season at the Linger Longer Intercollegiate over the weekend, was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for Mar. 27, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Vick tied for fifth with a 3-under total of 141 following rounds of 70-71 in the rain-shortened event that was played at the par-72, 7,073-yard Great Waters at Reynolds Plantation layout in Eatonton, Ga.
Vick’s performance helped Kennesaw State to a second-place showing in the 14-team tournament that included six teams ranked in Golfstat’s Top 50. The Owls finished behind No. 2 Alabama and ahead of No. 10 Georgia Tech, No. 12 Georgia and No. 14 Oklahoma State.
“I’m so proud of Austin. He’s come a long way,” head coach Jay Moseley said. “He’s a guy since the time he’s stepped on campus has had a ton of talent and just gotten more and more comfortable in tournament play and that’ what’s really helped him be one of our key contributors.
“He had a great week, he was comfortable and really showed what he is capable of doing,” Moseley added. “We all knew it was in him. He hasn’t really shown it yet and I think this will be a huge confidence builder for him moving forward.”
The player of the week honor is a career-first for Vick, who has recorded two top-10 finishes this season.
Kennesaw State, which moved up to No. 51 in the latest Golfweek rankings, will play its final regular-season tournament before the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships when it travels to Charlotte, N.C., to compete in the Irish Creek Classic at the Irish Creek Golf Club.
Kennesaw State is celebrating 30 years of intercollegiate athletics during the 2012-13 academic year.
