A-Sun Release
KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State freshmen
Joyce Mattagliano and
Erica Sergeant swept the Atlantic Sun Indoor Track and Field weekly awards following their performances at the Panther Icebreaker the conference announced Wednesday.
"First off, it's very exciting to sweep the A-Sun Athlete of the Week awards," director of track and field and cross country coach
Andy Eggerth said. "This is a testament to a great fall pre-season of getting after it. One of our goals as coaches is to help our athletes continually improve year after year. It's encouraging throughout the fall to see qualitative improvements and testing PR's, but it so much more rewarding to see those improvements actualized in competition. I'm happy for Joyce and Erica to see their hard work continue to pay off in wins and records. This fall they've worked harder than they ever have in their lives and they've seen it pay off with school records and top NCAA marks."
Mattagliano got off to a fast start in her KSU debut, winning the 800m in a time of 2:09.93, which set a school record by nearly six seconds. She currently has the fastest 800m time in the NCAA by two full seconds. She also was a member of the 4x400 team that finished third at the Panther Icebreaker with a time of 3:54.85. This is her first indoor track athlete of the week award.
Sergeant won the pole vault at the Panther Icebreaker. The freshmen broke the school record with a vault of 3.90m (12' 9.5") passing the record of 3.71 (12'2.00) which was set in 2011. She currently has the sixth highest vault in the NCAA this season. This is her first ever indoor field performer of the week award.
