A-SUN RELEASE
KENNESAW, Ga. – After a dominating performance over the weekend junior guard
Kristina Wells earned Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday, Feb. 10.
"I am extremely proud of Kristina Wells for getting this honor," said head coach
Nitra Perry. "I do not think another player deserves it more than she does. She has been very consistent all year and has been the ultimate team player. She has guarded the best player on the other team on numerous occasions from positions one through five. Any time we have needed a big play offensively or defensively, she has been the one to step up every time. She has shown true leadership ability and has grown tremendously since last season. I just expect more of that from her going forward this season."
It was Wells' third career Player of the Week honor, after twice garnering Newcomer of the Week during her freshman campaign, and second of the season for the Owls after freshman
Deandrea Sawyers took home A-Sun Newcomer of the Week accolades on Dec. 30.
Wells led the Kennesaw State women's basketball team to back-to-back wins in conference play this week, first taking a 88-79 victory over Lipscomb on Thursday, before putting on a defensive clinic in a 53-39 rout of Northern Kentucky on Saturday.
"It is an honor to be named A-Sun Player of the Week," said Wells. "I could not have achieved it without the help of my teammates and coaches."
The Douglasville, Ga., native averaged 23 points, 10.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.5 steals, while going 26-of-33 from the free throw line in the two victories.
After posting the Owls' first-ever Division I triple-double against the Bisons back in January, Wells again showed off her best as she was just two points shy of tying her career high with 30 points, including an 18-of-23 mark from the charity stripe, to go along with seven rebounds and five assists.
On Saturday, a week after the Norse stopped Florida Gulf Coast's 44-conference win streak, it was all KSU as Wells put up her 11th double-double of the season with a game-high 16 points and came within one rebound of her career-high with 14 rebounds in the win, while adding four assists and four steals against NKU.
For the season, Wells leads the A-Sun with 16.1 points per game and is fourth in the league with 9.1 rebounds per contest.
Wells and the Owls next heads south for a date with the Stetson Hatters in the Edmunds Center on Thursday, Feb. 13 in Deland, Fla. Tip is slated for 6 p.m. ET and can be seen on ASun.TV.
