BSB: Pentecost Named Semifinalist for Golden Spikes Award

Accolade Recognizes Top Collegiate Player in the Country

KENNESAW, Ga. - 
Max Pentecost was named one of 20 semifinalists for the prestigious Golden Spikes  Award  USA Baseball announced  Tuesday.  The award is presented to the top collegiate baseball player in the United States annually.

USA Baseball officials will announce the list of finalists for the 2014 Golden Spikes Award on Tuesday, June 3. To select the finalists, the list of semifinalists is sent to a voting body consisting of past Golden Spikes Award winners, past USA Baseball National Team coaches and press officers, members of media that closely follow the amateur game, select professional baseball personnel, and current USA Baseball staff, representing a group of more than 200 voters in total. The three finalist for this year's award will be announced on June 3rd.   The winner will receive the award at the Ron Dedeaux Foundation Dinner on July 17 in Los Angeles, California.
 
Fan voting will once again be a part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2014. Fans will be able to go on to GoldenSpikesAward.com and vote for three finalist for the award. Voting will close on May 30th.
 
Pentecost season has him ranked near the top of many categories nationally. The junior leads the nation in hits with 104. He ranks 2nd nationally in batting average and 3rd in total bases.  He ranks in the top 25 in five other offensive categories.   Pentecost can do it all behind the plate as well hosing 21 runners attempting to steal on him to go along with a .972 fielding percentage.
 
Last week, Pentecost was named Atlantic Sun Conference player of the year. He was also named to the A-Sun First Team All-Conference. On Sunday, he was named to the A-Sun All-Tournament team after going 7-16 and scoring seven runs to help lead KSU to their first ever conference tournament title.
 
Pentecost is also a semifinalist Dick Howser Award for breakout player of the year. He is one of 15 finalist for the Johnny Bench Award which is given to the nation's top collegiate catcher. Last week he was named to the Greg Olson Watch List which is given to the college baseball's breakout player of the year.
