A-Sun Release KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State's
De'Von Johnson and
Joyce Mattagliano swept the Atlantic Sun Indoor Track and Field weekly awards following their performances at the ETSU Track and Field Invitational the conference announced Wednesday.
Johnson won the triple jump at the ETSU Invitational with a lifetime best jump of 12.23m (40'1.5"). She currently leads the conference and is the only jumper over 40' at this point. Johnson also ranks tied 34th in the NCAA and 54th in the World for the triple jump so far this indoor season. She also finished seventh in the long jump with a leap of 5.50m (18'0.5). The sophomore also finished fourth from the field of 58 athletes in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.82. This is her first career A-Sun Field Athlete of the Week Award.
"De'Von (Johnson) has been willing to load up a bit more in training and competing in extra events," director of track and field and cross country
Andy Eggerth said. "The extra work has paid off as she is constantly performing better than ever. I am pleased to see her sacrifices pay off."
Mattagliano continued her outstanding indoor season with a grueling weekend leading the women's team to win the ETSU Invitational. The freshman started her weekend by running a lifetime best 56.95 400m to advance from the field of 95 athletes to the six person final. Then she came on strong in the second half of the 800m to win the event with a 2:11.82. Mattagliano was the fourth fastest collegian in the 400m final running another lifetime best 56.61 and then ran on the 4x400m relay, running a 55.5, helping the ladies to a third place finish 3:48.51. This is her third consecutive A-Sun Track Athlete of the week award.
" I am really proud of Joyce," Eggerth said. "She has been working so hard this year and as a result has gotten better and better every competition. Joyce has big goals for this year is well one her way to accomplishing them."
The Owls will return to the track on January 30 when they compete in the two-day Jack Johnson Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn.
