Tournament CentralKENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State softball team was victimized by a pair of early errors and a strong pitching performance from IUPUI's Brooke Boejter as it fell 4-0 to the Jaguars in its opening game of the 2015 Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament Friday (Feb. 13) at Bailey Park.
The loss overshadowed a strong relief effort in the circle by senior
Paige Mathews who allowed just three hits and struck out seven in 3.2 innings of work. The Owls' right-hander had a stretch where she struck out five consecutive batters before allowing a bunt single.
IUPUI (3-2) scored single runs in the first and third innings with two outs as it took advantage of a Kennesaw State (3-2) error in each frame.
Those early runs proved plenty for Boejter (3-2), who tossed a complete-game three-hitter as she allowed singles to
Kara Chambers,
Megan Veringa and
Noelle Winkles.
Two of those hits came in the fifth inning as Veringa and Winkles reached safely with one out and advanced to second and third with two outs. However, a deep fly ball to left field off the bat of
Lauren Bennett that was caught near the fence to end the threat.
IUPUI's final runs came on a two-run home run by Ali Mosier in the top off the seventh against Monica Vickery.
Kennesaw State continue play in the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament on Saturday (Feb. 14) when it faces Morehead State at 1 p.m. and No. 5 Kentucky at 5 p.m. at Bailey Park.
