The Kennesaw State men's golf team concludes its fall schedule this weekend when it travels to Loxley, Ala. to compete in the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational at the par-72, 7,096-yard Steelwood Country Club.
 
The Owls enter the 12-team event as the defending tournament champions and sophomore Connor Coffee seeks to win the individual title for a second consecutive year after capturing individual medalist honors in 2016.
 
The tournament opens with a 36-hole shotgun start on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. (ET) and concludes with final-round action on Sunday beginning  at 9 a.m. (ET). Kennesaw State will be grouped with UAB and Liberty and tee off on holes five through eight.   
 
The Pinetree Intercollegiate marks the fifth of five fall tournaments for the Owls. KSU previously competed in the Carpet Capital Collegiate (11th of 15), Shoal Creek Invitational (8th of 12), FAMC Intercollegiate (T3rd of 12) and Pinetree Intercollegiate (T2nd of 11).
 
The Field
The 12-team field for the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational includes Alabama, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Lamar, Liberty, Rice, Richmond, South Alabama, Southern Mississippi, Troy, UAB and Wofford. Two teams – Alabama (No. 1) and Kentucky (No. 8) – are ranked in Golfstat's Top 50. Kennesaw State is No. 58.

"We are excited to return to Steelwood where we had success last year and won both team and individual championships," head coach Bryant Odom said. "This fall has been up and down for us so we are hoping to find some consistency at a course we know we can play well. I am excited to end the fall on a high note with a good finish over some top ranked teams."

The Owls return to the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational as defending champions after recording a 25-shot victory over Kentucky. KSU carded a 27-under par 837 as four of its five players concluded the 54-hole event under par. Freshman Connor Coffee claimed individual medalist honors with a 12-under par total of 204 to finish four shots ahead of teammate Pablo Rodriguez-Tabernero Torres (208, -8). Freshman Jake Fendt (214, -2) and senior Teremoana Beaucousin (215, -1) also posted top 10 finishes, to tie for seventh and 10th, respectively.
 
Last Time Out
After a slow start, No. 48 Kennesaw State made a charge on the back nine of the final round only to fall one shot short and tie for second place in the 11-team Pinetree Intercollegiate that concluded Tuesday at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw. The Owls posted the low round of the day, carding a 4-over 292 to finish at 8-over par 584 and tie Wisconsin in an event cut to 36 holes due to rainy weather on Monday. Southern Illinois captured the team title with a 7-over par 583 total. Junior Jake Fendt finished at 3-under par 141 to tie Wisconsin's Sam Anderson for second place. Junior Wyatt Larkin closed with an even-par 72 to finish at 1-under par 143 and place fourth. Southern Illinois' Peyton Wilhoit captured individual medalist honors with a 7-under total of 137.

Junior Jake Fendt has been Kennesaw State's top player through three tournaments this season as he has posted a 71.27 scoring average. He has recorded par or better scores in 10 of 11 rounds, including seven at under par. Fendt has registered four top 20 showings, including three top 10s. The Suwanee, Ga. native is coming off his best performance of the fall after tying for second at the Pinetree Intercollegiate with a 3-under par 141 score.

The Kennesaw State men's golf program has established itself at the national level in recent years as it has made seven consecutive NCAA Regional appearances and advanced to the NCAA Championships on three occasions, including last season. The Owls finished the 2016-17 season ranked No. 47 by Golfstat and No. 37 by Golfweek.
 
Summer Highlights
Redshirt junior Wyatt Larkin made a successful return to competitive play after missing nine months due to a back injury. In his first competitive action, Larkin captured individual medalist honors at the Yamaha Atlanta Open after shooting rounds 68-71 for a 5-under par 139 score and record a two-shot victory. He also tied for low amateur at the Georgia Open, tying for fifth, and tied 17th at Porter Cup at Nigara Falls Country Club in Lewiston, N.Y.
 
Sophomore Connor Coffee continued the momentum from a strong freshman campaign by finishing second at the Georgia Amateur Championship at West Lake Country Club in Augusta. Posting four rounds in the 60s, Coffee shot rounds of 69-69-65-66 for a 5-under 269 and finished one shot out of first.
 
The 2017-18 Roster
Third-year head coach Bryant Odom welcomes back a veteran team in 2017-18 that includes three of the five players who helped the Owls claim the 2017 ASUN Conference championship and advance to the NCAA Championships. The KSU roster includes two seniors (Buster  Bruton and Paul Doig), four juniors (Wyatt Larkin, Jake Fendt, Adam Morris, Pablo Rodriguez-Tabernero Torres, sophomore Connor Coffee and two freshmen (Brady Keran and Justin Kim).
 
2016-17 Season in Review
Kennesaw State had a solid 2016-17 campaign, posting 12 top 10 finishes and 10 top five showings, including three tournament wins. KSU captured the Pinetree Intercollegiate, Steelwood Collegiate Invitational and ASUN Conference Championships.
 
Individually, sophomore Jake Fendt led the Owls with a 72.32 scoring average, had six top 20 finishes, four top 10 showings, and claimed individual medalist honors at the Southern Intercollegiate.
 
2016-17 Season Honors
Connor Coffee earned ASUN Conference Co-Freshman of the Year honors, while seniors Teremoana Beaucousin and Christopher Guglielmo, and sophomore Jake Fendt were named to the all-conference team.
 
Next Up
The Owls open their spring schedule Feb. 12 when they return to Alabama to compete in the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate hosted by South Alabama at Magnolia Grove-Crossings Course in Mobile.
