CLINTON, S.C. -- Junior QB Chandler Burks tied a Kennesaw State single-game record with four touchdowns and the defense pitched its second shutout in program history as the Owls ran past Presbyterian, 28-0, Saturday at Bailey Memorial Stadium.

The Owls extended their school-record winning streak to seven straight game as the team improved to 7-1 and is 3-0 in Big South play for the first time. The Blue Hose slipped to 3-5, 0-2.

Burks compiled 171 all-purpose yards (93 pass, 78 rush) and scored three rushing touchdowns and found Jake McKenzie for a 17-yard TD pass. By accounting for four touchdowns, he tied the single-game record set by Trey White last season at Monmouth.

"Credit to Presbyterian and their coaching staff as they came out with a lot of energy and focus," Burks said. "It was a test for us to go out and match them. Our defense backed us up as they always do every week and we stayed persistent on offense."

The defensive limited the Blue Hose to just 250 total yards for the game and just 4-of-13 on third-down conversions. The Owls put the game away by holding ball for the final 11:13 of the fourth quarter.

"Our kids are playing really well right now and have a lot of confidence," head coach Brian Bohannon said. "Our staff is doing a great job and when you can get it going and build on it, cease it and get the momentum going, it can carry you a long way. We have a lot of work still to do and finish what we started."

After a scoreless first quarter, Kennesaw State's offense found its groove with a 10-play, 50-yard drive that milked 4:05 off the clock and ended with the first of three rushing TDs by Burks. The Owls never looked back.

The Owls, which have been one of the nation's most opportunistic teams, generated the game's first takeaway with PC threatening to pull even when Dorian Walker intercepted a pass in the end zone to halt an 11-play drive. The ensuring nine-play, 80-yard drive that lasted just 1:59 ended when Burks hit McKenzie for a 17-yard strike that made it 14-0 at the break.

Two more scores by the Owls in the third quarter – both rushing touchdowns by Burks -- capped the scoring.

Junior LB Anthony Gore, Jr. and senior LB Izzy Sam led the team with seven tackles each, while Walker totaled six tackles, one sack, one tackle for loss and an interception. Redshirt freshman linebacker Bryson Armstrong, who was recently named to the STATS FCS Jerry Rice Award Watch List, totaled six tackles and a fumble recovery.

Sophomore RB Bronson Rechsteiner rushed a career-best 17 times for a career-best 90 yards, while McKenzie racked up 48 yards on nine carries and caught a team-high two catches for 31 yards and a score.

The Owls head to Bozeman, Mont. for their final non-conference and road game of the regular season next Saturday. The game versus Montana State is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET (12 p.m. MT) and can be seen locally on Peachtree TV.

POSTGAME NOTES
  • The victory extends the Owls' school-record winning streak to seven.
  • The 7-1 overall record and 3-0 mark in Big South play are also program-bests.
  • Kennesaw State recorded the program's second-ever shutout, and the first over a fellow FCS opponent. Last year, KSU blanked Clark-Atlanta, 56-0.
  • The nation's best rushing team, KSU rushed 58 times for 304 yards (5.8 avg.). It marks the fifth straight game and sixth time this season the Owls have surpassed 300 yards on the ground.
  • Junior QB Chandler Burks finished the game with four touchdowns accounted for (three rushing, one passing) to tie a school record set last season by Trey White, who accounted for four rushing TDs at Monmouth.
  • Sophomore RB Bronson Rechsteiner set career highs for carries (17) and yards (90).
  • The interception by sophomore DB Dorian Walker with Presbyterian threatening to score in the second quarter was his second interception this season. The Owls, who entered the game with the second-most picks in the FCS, have had at least one in every game.
  • KSU scored on the drive following Walker's interception, and are now 65 in points-off-turnover margin this season (75-10).
  • Zach Mitcher (RT) and Izzy Sam (LB) each made their 30th consecutive starts – they are the only two players to have started every game in program history.
  • Today's captains: Chandler Burks, Akebren Ralls, Jordan Genovese.
