KENNESAW, Ga. – After three months since its final game of the 2016 season and 188 days before its 2017 opener, the Kennesaw State football team kicked off spring practice Friday afternoon at the Owls' on-campus practice facility.
 
Under sunny skies and a 77-degree temperature that made it feel more like Summer Training Camp than Spring Ball, the Owls worked through a two-hour practice without pads. The team practices again without pads Saturday morning before donning the pads Monday.
 
"The difference for us this spring, compared to previous springs, is that we got a group of young kids that haven't been through this yet," said head coach Brian Bohannon. "So there's a lot of young guys and transfers that are learning how to do things. And in the guys that have been here, we're trying to create some consistency as to how we handle our business every day. But, today was a normal first day for us and it was great to be back on the field."
 
With Friday's practice in the books, the Owls have 13 more over the next month to prepare for the annual Spring Game, which is set for Friday, March 24 at 7 p.m. at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
 
Of the team's 17 returning starters from last year's squad that went 8-3 and finished one win shy of a Big South Conference title is rising junior QB Chandler Burks. The Douglasville, Ga., native was a second-team All-Big South pick last season.
 
"Today's a very heavy fundamental day for everyone," said Burks, who threw for 13 touchdowns and rushed for nine more last season. "We want to make sure the fundamentals are perfected, because in football fundamentals don't break down, scheme does. We must have attention to detail in everything we do out here. Today we were out here to get better and that's what spring is about."
 
The Owls 2017 opener is Thursday, Aug. 31 at Samford.
 
Season tickets for the 2017 campaign are now on sale for $99, plus your Owls Fund donation. Renewals for current season-ticket holders were sent in January with a deadline of March 15. New season-ticket holders will have their seats allocated in April.
