4/27/2017 10:56:00 AM

KENNESAW, Ga. -- Kennesaw State head football coach Brian Bohannon announced Friday the hiring of Ossie Buchannon as an assistant coach. The former standout at Samford University will coach the wide receivers.

Buchannon comes to the Owls from Berry College in Mount Berry, Ga., where he had a successful run coaching the wide receivers over the last four seasons. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Buchannon served as special teams coordinator, was the academic coordinator, and also coached the jumpers on the track team.

"We're excited to add Ossie to our staff," said Bohannon. "We were looking for someone with the ability to develop the talented student-athletes we have at wide receiver, and Ossie is the perfect fit. He's a good fundamentals coach, with strong ties to the southeast having coached and played in this part of the country. He was a talented receiver at Samford and it's important to have members of our staff that have played at this level."

Under Buchannon, Vikings' receivers Chris Lilly and Trey Ciresi compiled two of the top careers in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA). Lilly was a four-time All-SAA selection and finished his career with 2,543 yards and 19 touchdowns, while Ciresi was a two-time All-SAA pick and reeled in 2,060 yards and 22 TDs in three seasons.

Including Lilly, Buchannon and Ciresi has coached seven student-athletes to all-conference recognition in his career.

"I am so excited and grateful to be joining the Kennesaw State family," said Buchannon. "I've been following the growth of this program since the beginning. I'm confident that with Coach Bohannon's leadership, and the continued support of the administration, the Owls have a very bright future."

Prior to Berry, Buchannon spent four seasons on the staff at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., where he coached the defensive backs from 2009-13. While there, he coached with current Owls defensive coordinator Brian Newberry.

A graduate of Samford with a degree in business administration, Buchannon was a four-year letterwinner (2001-05) as a wide receiver for the Bulldogs. He left as the team's third all-time leading receiver, was a team captain and the offensive MVP as a senior.

Buchannon spent one year playing professionally with the Birmingham Steeldogs of the Arena2 league.
