Kennesaw State heads north to take on the Highlanders of NJIT in Newark, N.J. after splitting its two midweek games at Stillwell Stadium. The Owls defeated Western Carolina, 7-1, before dropping a 6-0 final to Georgia Southern Wednesday. The two teams are set to meet for the second time in programs' history, with KSU holding a 3-0 edge. The three games will air on Stretch Internet, courtesy of NJIT Athletics.
ON DECK
- Kennesaw State is coming off a 1-1 three-day stretch, with a 7-1 victory over Western Carolina before dropping a 6-0 final to Georgia Southern. The Owls enter the weekend 20-26 overall and sit fifth in the ASUN at 8-7.
- The Black and Gold travel to NJIT for the first time in program history, taking on the Highlanders at Riverfront Stadium. The Owls hold a slight 3-0 all-time series lead over NJIT, outscoring them 18-8 a season ago.
- KSU has totaled a .276 batting average in 18 road games, compiling 25 doubles, one triple, 18 home runs and 93 RBI. The team is slugging .404 with an on-base percentage of .367, going into the weekend 8-10 on the road.
- RHP Tony Dibrell has been nothing short of spectacular for Kennesaw State, posting a team-low 1.51 ERA in 77.2 innings. "Big Thunder" has totaled 81 strikeouts and two complete games. His ERA is ranked 12th in the nation and first in the ASUN.
- Taylor Allum has totaled 13 home runs this season, a career high and is three away from setting KSU's single-season record for most HR. He ranks first in the ASUN and 35th in the country in total HR, and first in the conference averaging 0.30 HR per game.
- RHP Gabe Friese, a Kennesaw native, currently ranks first in Kennesaw State program history in innings thrown (253.1), third with 15 wins, and fifth in total strikeouts (185). The righty also sits sixth in program history with 56 total appearances, and has totaled a 2.95 ERA in 13 appearances this season.
- Junior first baseman Austin Upshaw has been hot at the plate over his last nine games, totaling a team-leading 16 hits, eight RBI, three doubles and a .471 batting average. He is currently on a nine-game hitting streak.
- Head Coach Mike Sansing is the reigning ASUN Coach of the Year, winning his first honors since Kennesaw State joined the ASUN in 2006. He is the second-youngest coach on the 1,000-win list, and is one of 13 active coaches with 1,000 victories who have coaches at least 10 seasons of D-I baseball.
- The skipper won his 950th game Thursday (March 16) at Western Carolina, taking a 12-3 non-conference tilt at Hennon Stadium. The win also snapped a three-game losing skid in Cullowhee, N.C. Sansing now sits 40 wins away from winning his 1,000th career game in the Black and Gold uniform.
