COLLEGE GROVE, Tenn. – The No. 39 Kennesaw State men's golf team turned in another solid performance during Tuesday's second round of the NCAA College Grove Regional in College Grove, Tenn.
The Owls posted an even-par 288 and are at 1-under par 575 and in fifth place following 36 holes at the par-72, 7,383-yard The Grove. Senior
Christopher Guglielmo led KSU with a 2-under par 70.
Top seed and No. 2 Vanderbilt continues to lead the 13-team field at 12-under par 564. Lipscomb, Clemson and UCF are tied for second at 4-under par 572. The Bisons shot an 11-under par 277 to record Tuesday's low round.
The top five teams following Wednesday's final round advance to the NCAA Championships scheduled for May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. Kennesaw State will enter Wednesday's final round three shots ahead of sixth-place Troy (578, +2).
"Today was tough. It was a little warmer, the winds picked up and the greens are drying out, so it was a day where we had to persevere and just play smart, and the guys did that today," head coach
Bryant Odom said. "It was nice for Teremoana (Beaucousin) to step in there and pick up for Connor (Coffee) today. He's been struggling a little, but had a really nice round and Chris, Jake (Fendt) and Pablo (Rodriguez-Tabernero Torres) continued to do what they've been doing."
Guglielmo's 2-under par 70 was KSU's low round on Tuesday and the senior is in 11th place with a 2-under par total of 142, one shot behind Fendt, who is tied for seventh with a 3-under par score of 141. After a front nine that included two birdies, an eagle and three bogeys, Guglielmo played his final 12 holes in 2-under par.
"Today was definitely a lot harder. The pins were pretty difficult compared to yesterday and the wind picked up quite a bit," Guglielmo said. "But I think we stuck in there pretty well and finished with a pretty good score to keep us in position to qualify tomorrow.
"It was an up-and-down start today, but I didn't have an eight like I did yesterday on 11. I made a couple good puts on 10 and made a par save on 12 and birdie on 13, and those putts helped keep my momentum going and led to me shooting 2-under," Guglielmo added. "Last year we just barely missed it (qualifying) so we just have to give it all we have, minimize mistakes, hit the ball in good places and stick to our game plan, and see where we end up at the end. That's really all you can do."
Torres, who shot a 1-under par 71, is tied for 22nd at 2-over par 146, while Beaucousin (151, +7) and Coffee (153, +9) are tied for 49th and 59th, respectively.
Lipscomb's Dawson Armstrong currently leads the individual standings with a 10-under par 134 after carding a 7-under par 65 that broke The Grove's collegiate tournament record. He holds a one shot lead over Vanderbilt's Patrick Martin.
