ASUN Release
KENNESAW, Ga. - The men's track and field team has received four postseason awards after winning their fifth straight ASUN Outdoor Championship over the weekend the conference announced Thursday. Director of Track and Field
Andy Eggerth has been named ASUN Coach of the Year for the fifth consecutive year while
Fabeon Tucker was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer,
Terrell Singleton was named Co-Most Most Outstanding Track Performer and
Cameron Bolden was named Most Outstanding Freshman Performer for their performances at the conference championships.
Eggerth led the men to their fifth consecutive ASUN Outdoor Championship victory. His men's team shattered the previous ASUN scoring record with 307 points in the two-day meet. Those 307 points were the most scored by any Division I men's Outdoor conference championship winning team in 2017. The Owls won 34 medals including 13 gold medals at the Outdoor Championships.
"Glory to God," Eggerth said. " He is where all blessings flow from, and His favor allows me to be successful. He has placed me in a great situation, surrounded by outstanding people. This award is really more for my staff. I drive them hard and they perform in recruiting first and then in mentoring and coaching toward excellence. They had our student-athletes ready to take care of business even though they couldn't be present to enjoy what we always work so hard toward. Thank you to my student-athletes, thank you to my coaches, and thank you to our administration that supports us to be champions. I am nothing, the people surrounding me are everything."
Tucker, scored 36 points at the ASUN Championships winning two gold medals and a pair of silver medals. He won gold in the hammer throw with a toss of 58.66m (192'5) winning by nearly 25 feet. The set a school an ASUN Conference Championships record in the discus with a toss of 53.11m ( 174'3) to win the gold medal. He collected the silver medal in the shot put with a toss of 16.00m (52'6) and the javelin with a career-best throw of 50.18m (164'7). The Christiana, Jamaica native finished the season with the top hammer and discus in the ASUN. He is expected to compete at the NCAA Championships in the hammer throw and discus.
"Fabeon was outstanding this weekend," Eggerth said. "Not just this weekend, but all year. Fabeon and Coach Morris have made an outstanding coach-athlete team, and the results are obvious. What I like best about Fabeon is who he is as a person…humble, unassuming, charismatic, appreciative and whatever the opposite of entitled is. He is a two-time NCAA qualifier and we look forward to his ultimate competition next week."
Singleton won the 110m hurdles at the ASUN Championships in a career-best and ASUN record time of 13.92 seconds which qualified him for the NCAA Championships. He was also on the winning 4x100m relay that won gold in 41.01 seconds. The Kennesaw, Georgia native ran a career-best time of 52.80 seconds to win the silver medal in the 400m hurdles. His time in the 110m hurdles was fastest in the ASUN this season.
"What a rewarding finish for Terrell," Eggerth said. "He loves the 110m high hurdles and has tremendous respect for Wayne Newman and teammate
Dayo Akindele; so to be able to not only break 14 seconds and get the win but the conference record and NCAA qualification was a huge performance. Coach Campbell has done a terrific job developing Terrell from a decent high school hurdler into a two-time NCAA Championship competitor. Gold medals, conference records, and competing at the NCAA Championship is a great way to go out as a senior!"
Bolden won three gold medals at ASUN Championship. He won the 100m-dash at the ASUN Championships in a career-best time of 10.42seconds. The Jacksonville, Florida native won the 200m in a career-best time of 21.35 seconds. He was also on the winning 4x100m relay that won gold in 41.01 seconds. His times in the 100m and 200m at the ASUN Championships were the fastest times in those events in the ASUN this season.
"Cam started off slow this year," Eggerth said. "It was a difficult transition from high school to college, in a different state and far from home. He's come on strong at the end when it matters the most. What I am most proud of is what he's done in the classroom this spring with a 3.5 GPA! I'm so pleased for him to develop as a whole student-athlete and he's definitely deserving to be Freshman of the Year. Our previous Freshman of the Year have went on to be All-Americans so I think there are big things in Cam's future."
16 Owls will continue their seasons at the NCAA Championships in Lexington, Kentucky at the UK Outdoor Track and Field Complex May, 25-27.
