Lexington, Ky. - Six members of the Kennesaw State track and field teams competed on day one of the NCAA Track and Field Championships at the UK Outdoor Athletic Complex on the campus of the University of Kentucky on Thursday.
"What I like best about today is that our student-athletes are disappointed," Director of Track and Field
Andy Eggerth said. "That may sound backward, but it used to be that we were happy just to get to the NCAA Championships. Now we're not satisfied unless we're advancing through the rounds and achieving PRs. We had some solid performances and advancers but not what we're capable of."
Jocselyn Powell advanced to Friday's quarterfinal of the 400m hurdles after crossing the line in a time of 59.44 seconds. That time was second-best in her heat and 16th-best overall. This is the second year in a row that Powell has advanced to the quarterfinals in the 400m.
Senior
Hannah Wood ran a time of 11.84 seconds to finish third in her heat in the 100m. That time was good enough to advance Wood to Friday's quarterfinals
Sophomore
Dayo Akindele who is competing in two jumping events and the 110m hurdles during the weekend came up short in an attempt to make the finals in Oregon in the long jump. Akindele landed a jump of 7.21m (23'8). That jump was good for 25th place.
Sophomore
Jordan Gray finished 31st in the long jump with a leap of 5.97m (19'7). Gray's season will continue as she is qualified for the finals of the heptathlon at the NCAA Championships June, 9-10 in Eugene, Oregon.
Erica Sergeant's strong sophomore season came to an end with a tie for 38th place finish in the pole vault. Highlights of her season include setting the school record in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.04m (13'03.00) and taking a home a gold medal in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.90m (12'9.50) at the ASUN Outdoor Championships.
Fabeon Tucker wrapped up his strong two-career with the Owls with a 46th place finish in the hammer throw with a toss of 57.12m (187'5). Tucker joined the Owls as a thrower in the spring of 2016. Since arriving on campus, Tucker collected 11 event wins, six gold medals at the ASUN Championships and earned Most Outstanding Field Athlete at the 2017 ASUN Indoor Championships and ASUN Outdoor Championships.

Brenton Rosa will compete in the pole vault and Julija Tarvide will compete in the long jump at 4:30 p.m. Powell will run in the first round of the 100m hurdles at 4:30 p.m. with teammate
Laura-Maria Oja and the quarterfinals of the 400m hurdles at 7:00 p.m.
Terrell Singleton and
Dayo Akindele will compete in the 110m hurdles first round at 5:00 p.m. Friday on day two of the NCAA Championships at the UK Track and Field Complex.
