KENNESAW, Ga.- Kennesaw State's
Joshua Mulder and
Erica Sergeant earned ASUN Conference Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week awards following their performances at the WCU Invitational the conference announced Wednesday.
Mulder won the pole vault with a school-record leap of 5.27m (17'3.5") at the WCU Invitational. That vault passed his previous career-high vault of 4.91m (16'1.25") by one foot and two and a quarter inches. That vault currently leads the ASUN, ranks 14th in the NCAA East Region, and 31st in the NCAA this season. He also finished second in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 51.80m (169'11") which ranks second in the ASUN this season.
"Few performances surprise me, but Josh's pole vault this weekend did just that," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Andy Eggerth said. "He's been struggling with the vault this season largely because he was blowing through poles that used to be too stiff for him to jump on. Now that we've finally gotten the pole selection drawn up correctly he's vaulting higher than I would have ever guessed five years ago when he first picked up a pole as a freshman. In addition to being one of the elite decathletes in the country, he's becoming one of the elite pole vaulters as well."
Sergeant was tabbed ASUN Women's Field Athlete of the Week for the third time this season. She won the pole vault after clearing 4.04m (13'3). That vault set a new school record breaking the record she had set a week earlier at the Virginia Challenge. That vault leads the ASUN by one foot four inches and ranks 29th in the NCAA East Region and 69th in the NCAA this season.
"Erica continues to dial things in for the pole vault, and she's very close to hitting another six-inch school record in the vault so hopefully everything times up for her at the conference," Eggerth said. And of course, we're excited for her to move on to NCAA's and see how well she can perform there."
The Owls will begin the postseason at the ASUN Outdoor Championships on May 12-13 at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida.
