KENNESAW – The New York Mets in the Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft selected Kennesaw State's
Tony Dibrell in the fourth round (127th overall) Tuesday evening, marking the 10
th consecutive year a player has been drafted out of KSU.
"We're extremely happy for Tony as he's been committed to the Owls and to his personal growth over the past few years," head coach
Mike Sansing said. "Getting drafted by the Mets is a result of his hard work and dedication, and I'm excited for him and his future."
Dibrell played a pivotal role for the Owls' starting rotation throughout the 2017 season, posting a career-best 2.45 ERA and a 7-4 overall record in 14 starts. His stellar season led the right-handed pitcher a spot on the ASUN all-conference second team, and posted the third-lowest ERA in Kennesaw State's single-season history. The righty also tossed three complete games in 2017, ranking the third most for a single season in D-I history. Dibrell ranked first on the Owls' roster and fourth in the ASUN with 103 strikeouts in a career-high 95.2 innings of work, as opponents batted just .218 against him.
The right-hander is the 63
rd Owl to ever be drafted, and just the second to be selected between rounds 3-5 (Ronnie Freeman, 5
th Round, 183
rd overall by Arizona in 2012). Dibrell is, in fact, the first Black and Gold member to be selected in the fourth round.
