KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State's
Erica Sergeant and
Jocselyn Powell and
Dayo Akindele collected ASUN Women's and Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week Honors the conference announced on Wednesday, January 17.
Sergeant earned ASUN Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week after winning the pole vault at the Gene Edmonds Open. She won the event after clearing a new indoor school record of 3.96m (12'11.75). That vault ranks first in the ASUN and is tied for 30
th nationally this season. This is her second career ASUN Indoor Field Athlete of the Week honor.
"Erica has embraced change in training design this year and has been working really hard, so I am very glad to see her effort resulting in great things for her, " Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Andy Eggerth said.
Powell collected the ASUN Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week honor. She was the top collegiate in the 60m hurdles at the Gene Edmonds Open in a time of 8.43 seconds. That time leads the ASUN and is tied for 29
th nationally. She would run a time of 7.83 seconds in the 60m preliminaries to finish 10th. That is the fifth-fastest time in the ASUN this season. This is her first ASUN Indoor Track Athlete of the Week Honor.
"Jocselyn is passionate about her craft and has enjoyed a great fall season of training," Eggerth said. "Those things combined always result in great performances!"
Akindele won both ASUN Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors after his strong season-opening performance at the Gene Edmonds Open. He won the triple jump with a leap of 15.07m (49'5.5"). That jump currently leads the ASUN and is ranked 32
nd nationally. He would take fourth in the long jump with a leap of 7.03m (23'0.75) which is good for second in the ASUN this season. In his lone track event of the day, Akindele posted a time of 8.08 seconds to finish as the top collegiate in the 60m hurdles. That time ranks first in the ASUN and tied for 49
th in the NCAA this season.
"We are lucky to have Dayo," Eggerth said. "What a talent to win both field and track recognition. The nice thing is that he was disappointed with his results and you can look forward to even greater things to come."
The Owls will head to Nashville, Tennessee to compete in the Commodore Invitational hosted by Vanderbilt on Friday and Saturday January 19-20.
