FORT MYERS, Fla. – Kennesaw State baseball suffered its first ASUN Conference loss of the season to Florida Gulf Coast, 6-5, on Saturday afternoon inside Swanson Stadium. The loss snaps the Owls (18-8, 7-1 ASUN) six-game win streak with tomorrow's match set to determine the winner of the series.
The KSU bats came to life in the seventh.
Donovan Cash led off with a single and
Nick Hassan followed with his fifth double on the year. An error brought the first run of the frame home before
Hudson Mimbs laced an RBI double to bring the score within two.
Nick Colina continued to be a force out of the nine-hole and slashed a line drive to centerfield to tie the game, 5-5. Â Colina has reached base safely in his last five appearances.
The Eagles (19-8, 6-2 ASUN) scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Joe Kinker singled up the middle to close the book on the game.
Luke Torbert was excellent in relief for the KSU pitching staff. The right-hander came on in the fourth inning and tossed 5.1 innings. Torbert surrendered only four hits and retired eight batters in-a-row at one point.
The Kennesaw State offense recorded its seventh consecutive game with 10 hits or more. The Owls registered 12 on the afternoon and had four batters with at least two.
Josh Hatcher wasted no time extending his hit streak as he ripped a line drive up the middle to lead off the game. The KSU outfielder has hit safely in 21 straight and has reached base in 25 consecutive contests. He would end the afternoon 2-for-3 with a walk.
Cash Young repeated his power and has recorded a home run in back-to-back games. The third baseman laced a round-tripper in the fifth inning to get the Owls on the scoreboard. He contributed a 3-for-4 day and has six hits on the series.
Cash continued to stay hot and finished 2-for-4. The first baseman holds a six-game hit streak and has reached base in each of the last nine contests. Cash currently leads the Owls with 12 multi-hit performances.
Mimbs has been on a tear at the plate and registered his fourth consecutive multi-hit game. The KSU freshman ended the afternoon 3-for-4 with a double and one run scored. Mimbs has scored at least one run in the last eight games.
Kennesaw State baseball is back in action tomorrow for its series finale with Florida Gulf Coast. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. inside Swanson Stadium.
