Post-Game Quotes
Charleston Southern at Kennesaw State
Fifth Third Bank Stadium

Head Coach Brian Bohannon

Opening Comments

“Wasn’t as sharp as we should have been; to play a team like that you’ve got to be on point. We struggled moving the ball against the best defense in FCS. Our first extra point of the game, Charleston Southern ran through us like we weren’t there. I wasn’t very excited about that. There was an emotional swing in the game seeing 21-6 on the scoreboard. We battled to get some first downs and to ultimately get something going. To our kids credit, we didn’t play our best game but we did keep fighting and clawing, which I’m proud of them for that. It would have been nice to finish the win off at home, but that’s the way it goes. We live and we learned from this, now we’re going to hit the road and play a team that’s ranked higher than Charleston Southern.”

On Trey White’s injury:
“I don’t know the extent of his injury, I know he got hit in his left shoulder, I could imagine it’ll take him some time to be back for the next game but we have confidence in Jake. If Jake's got to play, he’s got to play. It was good for Jake to get in and do some things today; he had some positive plays.”

On KSU's youth vs Charleston Southern experience:
“There’s no doubt that the youth of our football team showed in today’s game in comparison to Charleston Southern, a more experience, mature team. We’ve struggled all year running the football inside; a big part of that is maturity and playing young kids against juniors and seniors. It was tough and a struggle facing Charleston, and again I think a big part of failing to read some of their plays comes with youth and maturity; it’s a process.”

On differences between QB’s Jake and Trey’s style:
“Jake throws the ball a little better than Trey, but they’re both tough hard-nose competitors.”

On keeping your guys motivated and what was said in the locker room:
“Guys I’m not worried about the scoreboard, I’m worried about what’s on your chest, and that says Kennesaw State.  It’s not always going to come with a win, that’s tough for kids to take but it is our job as a staff to help them understand the bigger picture, which is trying to become a better football team than where we started."

Player Quotes

Taylor Henkle (DB)
Ending to what’s been a good season. What will you think back about this first year, just the experience at home?
“This year at home has been great, we’ve been very successful here. You know, today we played a good football team and we came out a little short , but I think over the next three years that I am here and beyond that being here at home, in Fifth Third Bank Stadium is going to continue to grow. The atmosphere is going to get better, the team is going to get better and it’s going to be a special place that it already is and I am looking forward to next year when we step out on the field.”

On the atmosphere in the locker room after a loss
“Yeah it’s tough! You know, we’ve got a bunch of young guys but you’ve got the Mason Harris' and the seniors, PJ (Stone) and stuff that you know, talking us up. It’s our third loss, so we know how to handle it; it’s just a little different at home. Usually when we’ve been here and we’ve played a game, you know this being our first loss, we’ve been excited in the locker room but today was a little different.”

Difference between today and other Big South games
“It’s the best team we’ve played. That’s why they’re undefeated in conference and share the Big South title.  You know, we didn’t help our cause by how we played, we made some mistakes but (they are)  by far the best football team, and best-coached team we’ve played. I think we’ll learn a lot from this game that’ll help us in these next two games.”

Jake McKenzie (QB)
Great season at home. With these two tough opponents to end the game, is there any concern with you and in the locker room, just about those last two games taking away from all you’ve guys accomplished this year?
“No, I don’t think so. I think as long as we go out and play hard like we’ve been doing, it shouldn’t be a problem. So no, I think we’ll be just fine.”

How he felt about taking over for Trey after he leaves the game
“Well, I have to go in every practice knowing that I could get the call at any play, so I try and practice as hard as I can every week. I was pretty calm mentally and I guess physically too, so it wasn’t too bad, I felt pretty calm out there.”

On what Trey said once he came up after the injury
“He asked me what I saw on the first drive and then after that he just told me good luck and give them hell.”

On how often him and Trey spend time together and help each other out
“Really just about every day. We've got to be real good friends and I guess every practice we try to help each other out on certain stuff. I guess everyday we try to help each other.”
