ACWORTH, Ga. - Due to rain and inclement conditions, the remaining rounds of the First Annual Kennesaw State Women’s Tennis Halloween Invitational at the Governors Towne Club has been canceled due to rain.
With only six matches completed, the inaugural event was cut short after rain halted play just after 11:00 a.m. on Friday morning with a handful of matches completed. The event, which included Murray State, Georgia Southern and Kennesaw State, saw just six matches completed as KSU head coach Brandon Padgett canceled the remainder of the tournament as rain was forcasted for Saturday.
Of the three Owls to complete their first match, Vera Shkundina was the only victor for the Black and Gold as she won an impressive straight-set match over Murray State’s Alexis Webb, 6-3 and 6-1.
Agatha Palider was close to a two-set sweep of Dina Obukhova of Murray State as rain stopped the match with Palider winning the first set, 6-1 and leading 5-1 in the second set.
Georgia Southern got off to a strong start, winning three of its first four matches with two victories coming against the Owls. Kristi Kegerreis defeated Kennesaw State’s Alena Sergeychik in straight sets while Ashley Hungerford defeated Ayano Tanaka in two sets, 6-3 and 6-4.
In the Owls closest match of the day, freshman Iesha Holton took Murray State’s Ashley Canty to three sets before falling, 10-8, in a tiebreaker. Holton dropped the first set, 6-4, after taking a 3-1 lead to start the match. However, the impressive rookie rebounded to win the second set by a 6-2 score.
In other matches, Georgia Southern’s Ali Beavers defeated Murray State’s Angela McGahee, 7-5, 6-4 while Cassidy Cunitz of Murray State outlasted Georgia Southern’s Melanie Rolle in three sets 6-3, 5-7 and 10-8.
