Apostu and Lagerkvist Advance to Finals at Kennesaw State Fall Classic

FRIDAY RESULTS

MARIETTA, Ga. –
The Kennesaw State women’s tennis team wrapped the first day of action at the Kennesaw State Fall Classic, held at the Fair Oaks Tennis Center on Friday, highlighted by undefeated days from junior Alexandra Apostu (Bucharest, Romania/ Ion Barbu) and senior Therese Lagerkvist (Koping, Sweden/ Adalsskolan).

Apostu opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 win over FAMU’s Alexis Dean, before notching a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Jordana Klein of Georgia Southern to advance to the finals of the Black Draw. Lagerkvist tallied a first round 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win against Western Carolina’s Nicole Nielly, followed by a 6-0, 6-2 defeat of FAMU’s Shantal Blackwood to move on to the Gold Draw finals.

Sophomore Tamara Plocher (Cologne, Germany / Albertus-Magnus-Gymnasium) and freshman Isabela Castro (Brazil/ Santa Doroteia) each rebounded from an opening round loss to register wins in their respective consolation draws and advancing to the consolation finals in each draw. Plocher tallied a 6-1, 6-3 win over Symone Townsend of FAMU, while Castro recorded a 6-1, 6-2 victory over WCU’s Erin Maguire.
 
Sophomore Jana Hueckinghaus (Gevelsberg, Germany / Gymnasium Gevelsberg) split her two singles matches on the day, while freshman Blaire LaSure (Evans, Ga./Greenbrier HS) fell twice in singles action.

In doubles play, Hueckinghaus and Plocher teamed to post a 8-6 win over  Stacia Kissell and Sara Ruiz of WCU, while Apostu and Castro earned a 9-7 victory over FAMU’s Elysia Ortiz and Shantal Blackwood. Lagerkvist and LaSure dropped their lone doubles match of the day to round out the Owls.
