INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Committee selected the teams and individuals that will compete in the 2012 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships with the No. 20 seeded Kennesaw State women’s golf team heading to compete at the Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colo., with Colorado playing host.
This years Regional, May 10-12, will be the first ever for the Owls as the team is coming off the program's first Atlantic Sun Conference Championship victory. The Owls will enter the Regional with a stroke average of 76.4 and will compete with the youngest squad in the country as the lineup features three freshman.
“We are extremely excited to play in the West Region and represent Kennesaw State, and the Atlantic Sun Conference at the NCAA Regional,” head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. “We have worked hard all season for this, and we like our chances having already played in Colorado once this year. We are going to enjoy this moment, soak it all in and get back to work tomorrow.”
Kennesaw State competed in Colorado during the fall season when the team played in the Golfweek Challenge in Vail, Colo., in September The team also has some familiarity with the competition as the Owls have prospered over nine teams in prior meetings this season.
The Black and Gold will be joined by 23 other teams in the 54-hole tournament including Baylor, Northern Colorado (Big Sky), California (Pac-12), Oklahoma (Big 12), Colorado, Oregon State, Denver (Sun Belt), Pepperdine (West Coast), Illinois, San Jose State (Western Atlantic), Iowa State, Stanford, Jackson State (Southwestern Athletic), TCU (Mountain West), Texas Tech, LSU, Tulsa (Conference USA), Missouri State (Missouri Valley) UC Davis (Big West), New Mexico, UCLA, North Carolina and UNLV out West.
A total of 378 participants were selected for regional competition on Monday night. Of these players, 126 will advance to the championship finals as eight teams and two individuals will advance from each of the three regional locations.
The Regional Championships will lead the winners to Franklin, Tenn., for the 2012 Division I Women's Golf Championships hosted by Vanderbilt University as the Vanderbilt Legends Club will be the venue from May 22-25.
