KENNESAW, Ga. – Junior
Virginie Stein (Gevelsberg, Germany / Gymnasium Gevelsberg) has been named the Atlantic Sun Conference women's tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday (Feb. 19).
Stein made her spring debut last weekend in Montgomery, Ala., and went a combined 6-0 while playing at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles. The Owls' junior won in straight sets in each of her matches against Florida A&M, Jacksonville State and Alabama State.
Â
Stein opened the weekend by posting a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Florida A&M's Alexis Dean on Friday (Feb. 14). The win came after Stein and sophomore
Blaire LaSure (Evans, Ga. / Greenbrier HS) combined to defeat Shantal Blackwood and Arrice Robinson, 8-6.
Â
The Gevelsberg, Germany native carried the momentum over to Saturday as she and LaSure posted an 8-6 doubles victory before Stein made quick work of Jacksonville State's Raisa Guasti, 6-0, 6-1.
Â
Stein concluded with weekend by teaming with LaSure on an 8-5 doubles win before dispatching of Alabama State's Arantxia Wijingaarde, 6-1, 6-1.
Â
The Player of the Week honor is the first for Stein, who is a two-time A-Sun Conference first-team all-conference and all-academic selection. She also was named the conference's Freshman of the Year in 2012.
Â
The Stein performance helped Kennesaw State sweep its three matches and improve to 3-2 on the season. The Owls return to the courts on Friday when they travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia State beginning at 1 p.m. (ET).
