KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State volleyball team received an honorable mention for its three-member incoming 2017 recruiting class by Prepvolleyball.com.
"We've certainly had some impressive recruiting classes here as we've built this program up, however, this year's incoming class is definitely our most heralded from a ranking and awards standpoint," head coach
Keith Schunzel said.
The Owls have three incoming players with middle blocker Quin Sutphin, outside hitter Lauren Chastang and defensive specialist/libero Karlee Groover.
"In Quin Sutphin, we have KSU Volleyball's first ever Third Team Under Armour All-American," Schunzel said. "In Lauren Chastang, we have KSU Volleyball's first ever Gatorade State Player of the Year (Alabama), and in Karlee Groover, we have very arguably the best libero in the entire state of Georgia."
Sutphin is a 6'2" middle blocker from Fort Mill, South Carolina. She became the second Kennesaw State volleyball signee to be named an AVCA Under Armour All-American and first Third Team member. The multiple time All-State and All-Region middle won Region Player of the Year in 2016. She's been playing open level club ball with Carolina Juniors as well as making her region's USA high performance team. Sutphin is planning to major in biochemistry at Kennesaw State.
Chastang is from Mobile, Alabama and recently won her sixth straight 3A state championship at Bayside Academy and helped her head coach, Ann Schilling, win her 15
th straight state title. Playing on varsity since she was in seventh grade, the outside hitter was named MVP of the state championship her sophomore and junior seasons and was named to the All-Tournament team her senior season. She was also named MVP after playing with the South All-Stars for Alabama. The Gatorade State Player of the Year from Alabama had nearly 2,000 kills in her high school career.
Groover is a local product from Newnan, Georgia. She attends The Heritage School and was a multi-sport star all four years in volleyball, basketball and softball. In volleyball, she was a four time All-State and All-Region player. In basketball, she was an All-Region player all four years of high school and an All-State player two years. She landed on the All-Region team in softball all four seasons as well.
"This class of women is an exceptional one and we can't wait for them to get their career as Owls started," Schunzel said.
